| Rajesh Kohli, 22, is a case of 'Biliru bin Encephalopathy'. In layman’s terms, this means that for the past 22 years, he could only move by sliding along the floor. All his feeding is done in a sleeping position. He can only sit up for a few seconds and his facial expressions are retarded. Vijay Kapoor, is another case of 'Kernicterous'. The child requires support to getup, has spastics in his arms and legs and does not have much control of his body movements. His hand-to-mouth coordination is poor and speech is negligible. Enter Dr.Gunwant Oswal, with his divine cures. Five months after his healing touch on these mentally retarded persons, they are on their way to getting better. Rajesh can now sit comfortably on a wheelchair. For the first time in his life, he is able to step out of the four walls of his home and have a glimpse of the beautiful world. He also has a better understanding of his surroundings. As for Vijay, the treatment has been phenomenal. He can now get up unaided and has a better control over himself. His finger grip is better and for the first time has begun to mouth a few words! A miraculous recovery! "No," insists Dr.Oswal, "I am not a Godman. My medicines are homeopathic with herbal extracts. What I have developed is a Homeo-Biochemic formulation called ‘G-therapy’. This drug helps relive the sufferings of mentally retarded patients and helps those suffering from cerebral palsy, and my work has been carried out on a scientific basis." Dr. Oswal has been doing research in this field for the last 17 years. A student of BAMS ( Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medical Survey ) from University of Pune, he loved reading his father’s books on homeopathy and naturopathy. While studying the pathological changes of hemoplegia (old age paralysis), his attention was diverted to the causes and effects of behavioural disorders. The subject was fascinating and his involvement with it increased manifold. Very soon he began to prepare his own medicines and conduct small scale experiments. "I read a lot on the subject. I started trying out different formulas and finally hit upon G-formula," explains the elegantly dressed, tall and soft spoken doctor. "My first patient was a case of cerebral palsy. He was almost in a vegetative form and would be seized by convulsions. I treated him for one and a half years. There was a definite improvement in his condition. He was my first success story," smiles Dr. Oswal. This unbelievable recovery, rewarded him with many more patients. A year later he had 17 patients flocking his clinic. Today he has 750 patients to his credit. Explaining the concept of Nervous System Disorder, Dr.Oswal says, "Shortly after birth, one or two in every 1,000 children develop a permanent handicap. Depending on which part of the brain is damaged, various types of symptoms are visible in the child." Dr. Oswal is very careful while taking on patients. Before starting on G-therapy, he consults the patient’s doctor first. A video recording of the patient is taken at the beginning of the treatment to have a comparative study of the changes in the patient as a result of the G-therapy. Hospital admission is not required and the medicines are given on a monthly basis. Says, Dr.Oswal, "Every time the patient visits me, a video recording is done. This helps me to diagnose the changes taking place in my patient. It is a rather expensive affair, but it helps me in my research. Moreover, these video cassettes are the black and white evidence of the curative measures. He runs the clinic all by himself with the exception of a young boy who helps him distribute the medicines. "I cannot afford to have anybody else working for me, for the simple reason that my drug does not have a patent. I prepare the drug myself and keep a check on everything. If some one comes prying and steals my formula, I will be left in the lurch. So, it is still a one man show." Dr. Oswal has presented his work at the Indian Medical Association and at the 7th National Congress on Mental Retardation. His work has also been sent to institutions like UNICEF, London University, National Institute of Mental Health of Japan and the British Dyslexia Association. All these institutions have acknowledged the importance of his work. With G-therapy, patients are expected to respond after 16 weeks. They can also continue occupational and speech therapy during this period. Few children even respond as early as in the first six weeks. "Recovery time differs from patient to patient depending on the degree of brain damage". Some of the patients say that improvement is not total, it is only partial. Agrees Dr. Oswal when he says, "Around 60 percent of my patients respond to G Therapy. My medicines are not foolproof and I do not guarantee a person’s recovery. If the brain damage is colossal or if the patient falls ill or has some other disease he may not respond. This leads to a relapse and the process has to commence right from square one." Dr. V.M.Vasalkar, Assistant Director Health, whose daughter, Sonia is a patient of Dr. Oswal, is however quite happy with the changes in his daughter’s health. The six year old had poor eye contact, could not speak at all and was hyperactive. "After the therapy for the past six months, for the first time she has starting mouthing a few words," says a relieved Dr. Vasaikar. "And more importantly, her hyperactivity has reduced considerably. Earlier her temperament necessitated continuous presence of her mother but now she can be left on her own for a couple of hours." Dr. Oswal has patients from all over the country. While Ashish Shetty comes from Delhi, Sonia Vasaikar is from Nagpur. He even has patients from Australia and United Kingdom. "Since it is difficult for most of them to come to Pune, I have a clinic in Bombay, where I treat my patients every Sunday." "Since my work is on a small scale, I have no idea about the actual process taking place inside the brain for which continuous study in a research centre is important. I do not have the sophisticated equipment which such a large scale venture demands," For the same reason, Dr.Oswal hopes to tie up with a London based research institute, where detailed study can make the formula available to the millions suffering from similar disorders. With the establishment of G-therapy, Dr. Oswal has already branched out into another field- that of malignant gliomas (tumors of the brain). "This is another chronic disease, which inspite of medication, still results in a relapse." He is already treating five complicated cases of recurrence from surgery. I am the only person in the world who has produced a drug for mental disorders," says he with aplomb. Dr. Oswal hopes to get a patent for the same. This treatment also seems to show definite improvement in the mental level of normal human beings. It can help in increasing the efficiency and intelligence level in the normal population.’ Explains the doctor. "I am presently, working on the applicability of this treatment for normal people." With so many plans in the offing, Dr. Oswal plans to set up a rehabilitation centre at Uravade, a village 20 kms from Pune. Various therapies like Music therapy, Occupational therapy, Speech therapy and Psychological counseling with all the modern facilities will be made available here. Studies and treatment with the effects of Pyramids on the Human energy System will also be offered here. "The scope of Ayurveda, Homeopathy and Biochemics is limitless," avers Dr. Oswal. "I hope to carry on research in other incurable diseases also." With such determination and zest Dr. Gunwant Oswal is sure to succeed in whatever he applies himself to.
